25 in 25 Volunteer Spotlight – Charles Novak

Charles Novak, MS, MLADC, learned about rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT) while in prison. The approach to overcoming addiction made sense to him, but when his five-year sentence ended, Novak discovered there wasn’t a similar treatment readily available. “There only seemed to be 12-step programs,” he recalls. While studying to be an addictions counselor, he learned more about SMART Recovery. And it really clicked.  “I didn’t like the idea of powerlessness [with 12-step programs],” Novak says. He learned as much as he could about SMART Recovery, even talking at length with founding president, Dr. Joe Gerstein, about the program. A few years later, Novak brought the program to the detox center where he was working.   In 2014, Novak started the first SMART Recovery meetings in New Ha...

Apple Reportedly Set to Pull Thousands of iOS Games From App Store Over Chinese Licensing Issue

Image: GizmodoApple is reportedly gearing up to pull thousands of games from its App Store in China because they lack licenses from Chinese regulators, a move that could see the removal of popular games like Grand Theft Auto.Citing sources familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reported Monday that the crackdown on unlicensed games will begin in July. Potentially tens of thousands of games that are paid for or offer in-app purchases will be removed, per China’s regulatory policy that was initially introduced in 2016 and strengthened last year over concerns of gaming addiction and offensive content. The review processes can be lengthy, however, as regulators vet games for things like depictions of violence. The crackdown will almost certainly target unlicensed but wildly popular games like Gran...

There are a few other things that have never been more important: customer retention and brand loyalty. As discussed in my previous article, loyalty marketing centers on retaining existing customers, rather than acquiring new ones. When it comes to customer loyalty marketing, there is no shortage of ways social media can be utilized for: – increasing FOV (frequency of visit) – upsizing ATV (average transaction value) – strengthening the emotional connection between businesses and customers Social media is one of the many touchpoints between busines...

DDoS-for-hire gang escape with light community service sentence

Two men who ran a service making it easy for anybody to launch distributed denial-of-service attacks, capable of knocking websites offline, have been given a six month community service sentence by an Israeli court. As Brian Krebs reports, Yarden Bidani and Itay Huri ran vDOS, a notorious DDoS-for-hire service offering monthly subscriptions ranging from $20 to $200 per month that is estimated to have earned them over $600,000 up until mid-2016,What happened in mid-2016? The vDOS booter service was hacked, and its customer list fell into the hands of law enforcement.Seeing as most of vDOS’s DDoS-hiring clients were likely to have had a strong incentive for retaining their privacy, that was clearly bad news for online criminals and good news for the police.Bidani and Huri – who went by the on...

Stop reusing passwords, and enable two-step verification. Video gaming firm Nintendo has warned customers to not reuse passwords on different services after releasing an increased tally of compromised accounts.Back in April the firm first reported that it had identified 160,000 compromised accounts. Now, in an update, following an investigation by the firm, Nintendo revealed that it was adding an extra 160,000 – bringing the total to 300,000.It seems the hackers were able to gain access to the accounts because they used the simple technique of using credentials that had previously been exposed through other data breaches. That’s why it’s so important not to use the same password on your Nintendo account as your LinkedIn account, or Myspace account, or Zynga account… or indeed any other on...
